In Black and White: A History of the Southern African Comparative and History of Education Society. Crain Soudien - University of Cape Town

Introduction

Professional and scholarly associations are important windows on the societies in which they are located. They provide one with a view of the significant issues, debates and problems which exist in those societies.

The Southern African Comparative and History of Education Society (SACHES) illustrates this well. It emerges against, and in some ways in response to, the region’s complex colonial and racial dynamics and, in its development, reflects the substantial challenges that the field of Comparative Education encounters.

The purpose of this paper is, in the first instance, to describe the formation and development of SACHES, but, secondly, to locate this history within the larger social and academic politics of South Africa and the broader southern African region.
